Stay Comfy With Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry Bismarck, NDDo you get anxious at the thought of having a dental procedure? Do you tense up during every appointment? Sedation dentistry may be just what you need. At Deeter Dental Group, we value your oral health, and we understand that your experience will motivate or deter you from your next appointment. Here some basic information that helps you decide if sedation dentistry is right for you.

Will I Sleep Through the Dental Procedure?

Due to the nature of surgical procedures, general anesthesia is used to help patients sleep. Dental procedures are not as extensive, so general anesthesia is not required. The goal of sedation dentistry is to help you stay relaxed and comfortable during your treatments rather than fall asleep.

How Am I Sedated?

We use two types of sedation. If you are anxious before you arrive at our practice, we may prescribe a mild oral sedative to help keep you calm. For our sedation dentistry procedures, we use nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas.” It is very effective and safe for patients of all ages. The sedation may be coupled with local anesthesia that numbs the treatment area.

How Will the Oral Sedative Affect Me?

There are some subtle differences in how people respond to a specific medication. In general, sedatives help people feel calm. You cannot drive while on the sedative, so someone will need to bring you to our practice and drive you home.

How Will I Feel During My Sedation Dentistry Procedure?

You will be able to hear what is happening during your appointment. Most patients feel very relaxed while others become quite talkative.

What Happens After the Sedation Dentistry Procedure?

The sedative and nitrous oxide may take some time to wear off, so we recommend that you stay home for at least 24 hours. If local anesthesia is used, you should only have soft foods until your mouth is no longer numb.
