Composite Fillings Bismarck, Garrison – North Dakota
What are Composite Tooth Fillings?
Deeter Dental offers several tooth colored filling options to repair your cavities or replace old metal amalgam fillings. One of the most effective options is composite tooth fillings. Dental composite is made of a resin mixture and is available in a number of shades of white to match your tooth enamel.
Creating Composite Tooth Fillings
Creating a composite tooth filling can be done in a single office visit. First, Dr. Matt, Dr. Terry, or Dr. Lucas will remove the portion of your tooth damaged by the cavity or remove the metal amalgam filling you are having replaced. Our Bismarck cosmetic dentists will choose the appropriate tint of composite to best match your tooth color, making the composite tooth filling as invisible to the naked eye as possible.
The surface where the composite filling will be placed must be clean of debris and dry. The composite can then be applied in thin, putty-like layers to cover the damaged area. Each layer of dental composite is cured, or hardened, with a special light before the next layer is applied. Once the surface of the tooth is sufficiently covered and adequately built up, a final layer is applied which seals the other layers.
The top layer is then polished to an enamel-like luster to match the rest of your tooth surface, and your composite filling is complete.
Composite vs. Porcelain
Many dentists prefer to use composite fillings for smaller cavities or in teeth with less damage because dental composite requires little or no healthy tooth material to be removed along with the decayed material. In contrast, healthy tooth material often must be removed for porcelain dental inlays and onlays to have enough space to be placed in a tooth cavity.
Dental composite fillings are stain-resistant and create a tight seal on your teeth to keep bacteria and moisture from damaging your tooth’s core. The hardness is similar to your natural tooth enamel, though slightly lower than porcelain. Most patients find that they never need to have their composite fillings replaced, and rarely have to have them repaired.
Metal fillings are a thing of the past, and if you are ready to have others notice your smile instead of your fillings, composite fillings could be the right option for you.
