Dental Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning
Bismarck, Garrison – North Dakota
Dental hygiene is about more than simply brushing your teeth twice a day and visiting the dentist for the occasional teeth cleaning. It is important that you be educated about dental hygiene so your teeth and mouth can remain healthy and functioning correctly for your entire lifetime.
Why Regular Teeth Cleanings Matter
If you think that brushing your teeth is enough to keep them healthy, you are wrong. Even if you are diligent about brushing and flossing your teeth, they will still accumulate tartar, a harder version of plaque that builds up from the residue left over by food. If plaque and tartar go unchecked, they can creep down below your gum line and cause gingivitis, or gum disease.
Over a period of time, the residue and bacteria in your mouth will begin to break down your tooth enamel, causing tooth decay, cavities, and eventually infection and tooth loss. If your gums are allowed to deteriorate, this will only compound the problem.
While all this may sound very alarmist, the fact is that a little prevention will go a long way toward preserving your natural teeth well into your senior years and, potentially, for your entire life.
Dental Hygiene at Home
Regular teeth cleanings are important, but they are only one side of the dental hygiene issue. Our team will do their best to spot potential problems early, but it is important that you also be vigilant about your dental care. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, being sure to reach all the surfaces of your teeth, including your back molars. You should also floss at least once a day, because your toothbrush bristles cannot reach between your teeth where a lot of plaque builds up.
When you brush your teeth, you should also gently brush your gum line and pay attention to any changes in gum coloration or texture which may indicate gum disease. If you notice any changes to your dental health, you should schedule an appointment immediately to prevent complications.
Our team is happy to make recommendations for your at-home dental hygiene regimen, and if you have questions or concerns, we welcome you to ask Dr. Terry, Dr. Lucas, or Dr. Matt for advice. Your whole dental health is our goal.
