Temporary Dentures vs. Permanent Dentures
The most obvious disadvantage of temporary dentures is that, because they’re made in advance and placed soon after the damaged or decayed teeth are removed, the fit will not be exactly perfect. So they may require more frequent adjustments to get a good fit that you feel comfortable with. Temporary dentures should only be considered a temporary solution until the permanent dentures are ready.
Of course, both temporary and permanent dentures will take some time for you to get used to them. Don’t worry if the dentures feel a little loose at first—your cheek and tongue muscles will adjust to them eventually. You may notice more saliva in your mouth than usual, or you may even notice minor soreness or irritation. But, don’t worry. These problems usually resolve on their own as your mouth adjusts. But if you experience discomfort that doesn’t seem to improve, see your dentist to have them adjusted.
Some people opt to have their temporary dentures realigned for a better fit so they can use them as permanent dentures. Others prefer to keep them as a spare set in case their permanent dentures get lost or become damaged. It would not be fun to be without teeth while you’re waiting for your dentures to get fixed or replaced. If your dentures need to be repaired or realigned, they will have to be sent to a laboratory and likely kept overnight.
