What is sedation dentistry?
Patients with dental anxiety, or those who will be in the dental chair for an extended period of time for extensive dental work, will want to ask their dentist about sedation dentistry. Drs. Terry, Matt, and Lucas Deeter of Deeter Dental encourage patients to learn about the two types of sedation used in the practice, including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
- Nitrous oxide – with nitrous oxide, an odorless, colorless gas that is inhaled through the nose, patients can feel at ease the moment they sit in the dental chair. Nitrous oxide is perfect at providing almost instant relaxation when patients breathe in the gas during their visit. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide continues to be one of the most requested sedation methods at our office.
- Oral conscious sedation – some patients have such extreme anxieties that they may not even make it to their dental appointment because of their fears. In situations such as this, we may suggest oral conscious sedation, which can be taken prior to arriving at the dental office. Patients need to arrange transportation accordingly, but most with moderate to severe anxieties find this to be the most appropriate solution for them!
